Hi there! I’m Cristina. When I was a kid, there was nothing I liked more than a long wander through the woods. I would look for animal footprints, listen for birds, and hold my breath and wait for what felt like forever (but was probably really only five minutes or so) in hopes a deer or fox or bobcat would wander past my hiding spot. And always, I hoped to find something magical. Something fantastical. Something impossible. Something like a hobbit or a pixie or a little green dragon.
I never did find a hobbit or a pixie, but it turns out the woods (and all of nature) are packed full with magic. Finding the very first of the spring ephemerals blooming beside a towering oak? Magic. Coming face to face with a bright-eyed box turtle on a warm summer day? Magic. Hearing (and then seeing) a weasel scurry through dry fall leaves before disappearing beneath a lichen-covered boulder? Definitely magic.
My hope is that Wren and Duck and their many real and magical friends will help children (and their reading-aloud grownups) discover and fall in love with the very real magic of the natural world. From sweeping forests to a single flowerpot on a sunny window sill, there is big and small and beautiful and bold magic in all of nature. All it takes is the willingness to see it.
